Compared to the larger folding devices of the Xiaomi MIX Flip series, the arrival of this series may have seemed a little “late” for the global market. However, what you may not know is that Xiaomi had been planning and working on this compact folding series for nearly five years, meticulously refining and perfecting the design to cater to the unique needs and preferences of smartphone users.

Design
When the Xiaomi MIX Flip is closed, its back resembles an exquisite eyeshadow palette, sparkling under the light. The front is covered with a square piece of slightly curved glass, looking like a carefully polished black gem. In terms of color options, the Xiaomi MIX Flip comes in classic black and white, as well as the stunning Phantom Purple and Phoenix Feather Fiber Edition. The Phantom Purple variant I had the chance to try out uses a flash sand process that not only looks smart and shiny.
Reliable Performance
Reliability is a crucial concern for foldable smartphones in the global market, and Xiaomi has addressed this head-on with the MIX Flip. The external screen is made of Xiaomi Longjing Glass, which is 10 times more resistant to drops than conventional glass.
The internal display utilizes UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass), which is 2.25 times stronger than CPI and offers a smoother, more durable experience.
The middle frame of the MIX Flip is constructed from the same 6M42 high-strength aluminum alloy used in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, while the hinge employs a core material of high-strength steel and ultra-wear-resistant carbon ceramic steel. This combination ensures exceptional durability and resistance to falls and bending.
Additionally, the Xiaomi Longkai architecture has passed SGS high-reliability folding quality and ergonomic folding design certifications.
Display
While early small foldable devices often had external screens with lower specifications compared to their internal counterparts, Xiaomi has broken this convention with the Xiaomi MIX Flip to cater to the discerning audience. Both the internal and external displays offer the same high-quality features, such as a 460PPI pixel density, 1.5K resolution, 120Hz high refresh rate, and professional color accuracy, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience for users.
To further enhance the user experience, Xiaomi has reconstructed its Surge OS to make the external screen truly versatile and practical. The external screen directly inherits the intuitive interaction logic of a standard smartphone, allowing for seamless navigation and use without any additional learning curve.
Xiaomi has also optimized the external screen’s layout, dedicating a large 16:9 ratio main application area and a secondary smart hanging window for quick access to notifications. Importantly, the system applications, including the keyboard, work just as seamlessly on the external screen as on the internal display.
Camera
As Xiaomi’s first Leica-equipped small folding phone, the MIX Flip boasts impressive camera capabilities. The main 50MP camera is powered by Xiaomi’s customized Light Hunter 800 sensor, offering a large 1/1.55-inch size and 2μm pixel size for exceptional low-light performance and dynamic range, crucial for capturing vibrant, high-quality images in diverse lighting conditions.
The Xiaomi MIX Flip also introduces a new floating 2X telephoto lens, which provides a “golden portrait” focal length of 47mm and can even create a virtual 4X telephoto lens through high-pixel mode.
